How to Reconstitute Peptides

Reconstituting peptides is a straightforward process that requires sterile technique and proper materials. Follow this step-by-step protocol for consistent results in your research.

Materials Needed

  • Lyophilized peptide vial
  • Bacteriostatic water (BAC water)
  • Insulin syringes (1mL / 100 unit)
  • Alcohol swabs
  • Clean workspace

Step-by-Step Protocol

  1. Clean: Wipe the tops of both the peptide vial and BAC water vial with alcohol swabs.
  2. Draw water: Using an insulin syringe, draw the desired amount of bacteriostatic water (use calculator above).
  3. Add slowly: Insert the needle into the peptide vial and let the water run down the side of the glass — do NOT spray directly onto the powder.
  4. Swirl gently: Roll the vial between your hands to dissolve. Never shake vigorously as this can damage the peptide chains.
  5. Wait: Allow 5-10 minutes for complete dissolution. The solution should be clear.
  6. Store: Refrigerate at 2-8°C. Most reconstituted peptides remain stable for 3-4 weeks.

Storage Guidelines

Proper storage is critical for maintaining peptide potency. See our full Peptide Storage Guide for detailed protocols.

  • Unreconstituted: Store lyophilized peptides at -20°C for long-term, or 2-8°C for short-term (weeks).
  • Reconstituted: Always refrigerate at 2-8°C. Use within 3-4 weeks for most peptides.
  • Avoid: Light exposure, repeated freeze-thaw cycles, and temperatures above 25°C.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is bacteriostatic water?

Bacteriostatic water is sterile water containing 0.9% benzyl alcohol as a preservative. It prevents bacterial growth in reconstituted peptide solutions, extending shelf life compared to sterile water.

Can I use sterile water instead?

Yes, but reconstituted peptides in sterile water must be used within 24-48 hours as there is no preservative to prevent bacterial growth. Bacteriostatic water extends this to 3-4 weeks.

How do I know the peptide is fully dissolved?

A properly reconstituted peptide solution should be completely clear with no visible particles or cloudiness. If particles remain after gentle swirling for 10 minutes, the peptide may be damaged.
